"I write a lot, I mean a *lot*, about social issues. 'Blonde Boy, Red Lipstick' for instance, the book is primarily a romance, aimed at all readers and it can be read as a fairly simple, old-fashioned, love story. But the themes of gender, transgender and our attitudes towards those issues.. those are fundamental to the work. Likewise, the book 'Dying in Brighton' can be read simply as a collection of short stories. But that book is primarily about homelessness, the issue of homelessness. And so it goes on. For me, I feel it's incredibly important to talk about social issues, but I also feel the best place to do that is within the framework of a good story, a great read".
